So I tried my hand at building a new theme for my blog. Let me know what you think. The actual implementation is a little buggy, but it’s getting there. All feedback is wanted, even if you think it might sound mean! Bring it on.

Open Usability
Well here’s a pretty cool idea. The Open Usability Project connects open source developers with Usability Experts with some time and resources on their hands. Maybe if I get a little beach time* I’ll step it up.
* When you’re not assigned to a project at TW, you are put on “The Beach,” and are supposed to find interesting projects to keep you busy and learning.

Size Matters
I love my Powerbook. It’s tiny. Teenie Tiny. It’s the old G4 12 incher. The really little one. I am convinced that it’s the perfect size.
Lately I’ve been thinking about getting a new Macbook, but only because I’d be able to use it for work because it would run windows. But there’s something holding me back: the new Macbooks are way too big. The smallest ones are huge in comparison to my 12 inch Powerbook. I’d say that I travel enough now to be justified in my size issue whines. That extra pound and extra few inches DO matter.
Apple, if you could just shrink it down a little bit, I might bite. Until then, I’ll pass.

The ThoughtWorks “Sign”
Over the last 2 days, I’ve met damn near a million people at my current project. The project has been going on for a few months now, so everybody else knows everybody else, and there’s a constant rhythm that comes from people knowing what they’re supposed to be doing. Everybody works together, and each person (ThoughtWorkers and Client Employees alike) are all working seemlessly together. This is a great thing, but for somebody new to the team (me, for example), it can be confusing.
I want to be able to know who the ThoughtWorkers right from the get go. Have any of the other TWers run into this problem? My solution is to create a ThoughtWorker “sign.” Something that we all know, but is sly enough to keep somewhat secret. That way when we meet we can both flash the sign and know we’re on the same page…or at least that we work for the same company.
Am I out of my mind? Is this totally unneeded? And of course, who’s got a recommendation for what the sign should be?

The First Day
The first day on a project is always a long one. No matter how hard one tries, there is always just so much to catch up on and learn in order to feel somewhat comfortable with the topic/software/process.
This morning I was up at 4 AM, out of the house by 5, and in a brand new office on the other side of the state by 8, only to be thrown into a gauntlet of jargon, processes, relationships, and individuals. I’m surprised to find that I really enjoy this situation. I get really excited when I look at what people have been working on, and I revel in the act of playing catch up. Sure, it’s pretty stressful since the clients and my peers expect me to catch up quick and deliver in a very short time period, but there’s something nice about delivering quickly and getting out, at least to me.
Of course, in a few weeks I should check in to see if I’m still happy with the fast pace. For now, I’ll just keep trying to catch up…

Running Man
Phew, It’s been a while. Went on a solid one-miler this afternoon. It’s time to get back in the habit, cause I’m beat…

A little spike action
So in my free time over the past few days I’ve been trying my hand at a little Javascript. It’s not too complex most of the time, but still, you gotta start somewhere. Check out my calculator:

TerraPass
I was milling about today on my employer’s internal discussion board and stumbled upon this fun little link. TerraPass sells credits to help negate the CO2 released by one’s car, home, and air flights. I’ve been looking for a way to help heal the world for my car and plane usage…what a cool idea.
