I think the Mozilla project to incorporate design into the open source movement might change your assessment of open source software. It can be a time suck, sure, and requires at minimum a bit of initiative from willing amateur developers. But that is with the majority of such projects derived from technologists. WordPress installation is very simple, but could the barriers be lowered further with some communal usability and UX inquiry?</description>
